Activity Coordinators plan, lead and/or supervise recreation programs for the developmentally disabled, physically limited, or frail elderly participants in adult day care centers. Most of their work is done in recreation rooms in the center; however, occasionally the activity is done out of doors. Activity Coordinators are responsible for designing and leading such activities as craft projects, card and board games, current event discussions, dance classes, aerobics and fine arts. They arrange for guests to come give presentations in such areas as self-defense, fire safety, horticulture, entertainment, and nutrition. They assess the needs and interests of each participant and develop an individualized activity plan. They maintain quarterly progress notes and conduct reassessments.
Reported California salaries for this occupation range from $46,000 to $53,000 annually, with exercise physiologists earning slightly less. These salaries reflect jobs in large facilities, however; those working in small centers can expect to earn considerably less.
