Program Aides lead clients in activities such as craft projects, dance lessons, community skills, and exercise programs, as well as current events and other social programs. They assist patients with eating meals when necessary, lead teams on outings (on foot or by bus), and maintain the safety and well being of clients. They provide reality orientation for participants, give reminders to follow through with medical instructions and diet restrictions, and provide emotional reassurance to participants. Program Aides sometimes provide training in daily living skills using behavior management methods. They report to the Program Director, Activity Director, or nursing staff, both orally and in written reports, and attend regular staff meetings. They assist with personal care such as toileting and grooming.
A formal salary survey is not available; however, references to hourly salaries range from $7.10 to $14.00 for those with experience. Larger centers and some small centers offer medical, dental, long-term disability insurance, vacation and sick leave benefits.
Job Skills Needed: - Oral and written communication skills - Fluency in second language helpful - Ability to understand client's needs using listening skills - Sincere desire to work with frail elderly or adults with disabilities - Knowledge of basic sign language sometimes helpful - Patience - Compassion in dealing with people with a variety of physical, emotional and social needs - Flexibility - Sense of Humor Training/Requirements: High school diploma almost always required Fingerprint processing required First Aid and CPR certificates required (training sometimes provided)· Proof of current good health (signed by a physician)· Tuberculosis test California driver's license and clear driving record sometimes required
