Shuttle bus and van drivers in adult day care settings: - Operate van or shuttle bus between day care facility and participant's home, keeping to time schedules and route assignments - Ensure clients have seat belts fastened properly and wheelchair brakes are locked - Use hydraulic lifts and own strength to safely assist clients on and off bus and into buildings - Maintain daily log on passengers served - Do routine mechanical checks on the vehicle such as checking brakes, windshield wipers, hydraulic lifts, etc., as well as add gasoline or oil regularly - May operate cellular phone or radio device to report disruption of service or request medical assistance - Sometimes performs other duties when not driving, such as custodial and building maintenance Job prospects are better for shuttle bus drivers at the larger social or health adult day care facilities.

Job Skills Needed: - Oral communications skills to talk to passengers - Some lifting required to assist participants (and their belongings) from van into residence or center - Patience and compassion - Reading skills for maps and street signs - Knowledge of city streets and routes - Writing skills to keep mileage logs and make reports - Ability to recognize malfunctions in engine and related parts Training/Requirements: - For vans carrying less than 10 passengers: Valid California Class C standard driver's license is usually sufficient, but employee should read the California Commercial Driver's Handbook available at the Department of Motor Vehicles for current requirements - For paratransit vans carrying more than 10 passengers: -- Class B Instructional Permit obtained at the Department of Motor Vehicles -- General Public Paratransit Vehicle (GPPV) Certificate and training obtained at the California Highway Patrol -- Class B license with Passenger Endorsement obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles - Fingerprint processing required - First Aid and CPR certificates required by some employers (Training sometimes provided) - Proof of current good health and TB test mandatory - Experience working with frail elderly or with developmentally delayed individuals required.
