Microbiologists develop and carry out chemical, physical and biochemical tests to study microscopic organisms, such as bacteria and viruses, found in samples of raw materials used in production and in samples of in-process and finished products. Using optical and electron microscopes, chromatographic equipment, spectrophotometers, amino acid analyzers, and other equipment to examine microorganisms to ensure that company and regulatory quality standards are being met. They are also responsible for documenting the results of microbiological tests.
