Network Control Technicians assist in the installation, set up, test, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Local and/or Wide Area Networks (LANs and WANs). They assign passwords, use manuals, maintain a variety of logs and communicate with Network Analysts or LAN Managers about specific system problems. Technicians who work for manufacturers occasionally go to customer sites to set up, adjust and/or connect new products. As a network system ages, technicians also repair and replace systems. An alternate title for this job is Data Communications Technician.
Median Wage Range: All Levels: $20,000 - 37,500/year
Job Skills Needed: - Up-to-date knowledge of at least one brand of LAN/WAN software, hardware and operating system - Ability to communicate technical information to non-technically trained users - Knowledge in network-related softwares such as E-mail - Mechanical aptitude - Ability to keep accurate repair and troubleshooting logs, as well as accurate records of equipment registration information. Training/Requirements: - A.A. degree or better in Electronics Communications or Computer Science, certificate from vocational school or 3-4 years hands-on experience in network and computer technologies - High school diploma required - FCC license required for Wide Area Network Technicians
