NUMERICAL CONTROL (NC) TOOL PROGRAMMERS (SKILLED OCCUPATIONS IN ROBOTICS/AUTOMATED SYSTEMS) California Occupational Guide Number 2004-D (part) Interest Area: Emerging Occupations 1994
Numerical Control Tool Programmers write programs to direct NC machine operations. Most NC machines are computer numerically controlled. Programmers need a broad knowledge of machining, mathematics, blueprint reading, machine tools, and the characteristics of materials used to make the parts. They analyze blueprints of parts to be made, compute size and position of cuts, select cutting tools, and calculate speed and feed rate. They then write the program in the language of the machine's controller and store it, usually on a computer disc. An increasing number of programmers now use CAD to write the programs.
