INFERTILITY SPECIALISTS (SPECIALIST MEDICAL PROFESSIONS) California Occupational Guide Number 2002-D (part) Interest Area: Emerging Occupations 1995
Infertility Specialists are solving problems associated with reproduction. Some Infertility Specialists do research work in laboratories and study the causes of and treatment for infertility. Infertility Physicians and Surgeons work directly with the patients. They consult with patients and devise a personal program for treatment. They explain hormonal therapy to the patients, write prescriptions, and monitor the patients' progress. The physicians perform such laboratory surgeries as endometrial biopsies, laparoscopies, and histosalpingograms. If hormonal therapy and artificial insemination do not work, the Physicians and Surgeons sometimes perform more advanced and in-depth processes of in-vitro fertilization and embryonic transfers. Nurse Practitioners often administer artificial insemination while the patient is on hormonal therapy and sometimes perform endometrial biopsies. Ultrasound Technologists perform ultrasound tests on the patient after treatment has started which show whether or not the hormone drugs are working.
