The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that by the year 2005 almost all drafters will use CAD systems regularly. About one-third of drafters work in durable goods manufacturing. CAD/CAM drafting technicians work with CAD/CAM engineers and use computer controlled systems to design products and automated processing systems. They could be involved in any part of the manufacturing process but usually specialize in either CAD or CAM. Those specializing in CAD are primarily concerned with product research. Those specializing in CAM are involved with robotic devices or automated and computer-controlled equipment and assist in all phases of engineering tasks.
According to a number of California surveys, the annual median salary for experienced Drafting Technicians ranges from $20,800 to $31,200.with a master's degree average about $39,200, and those with a Ph.D., $54,400.
